Department of Computer Science and Information Technology

Department of Computer Science and Information Technology was founded on March 11, 2003, and 7 Lecturers along with 5 Laboratory Assistants led by the Head of the computer laboratories joined the staff.

The first Head of the Department was B. M. Liashenko, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor. After May 2012 the Department was run by Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences A. A. Pohorui and Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences O. M. Spirin. Nowadays the Head of the Department is Associate Professor, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences Sikora Yaroslava Bohdanivna.

There are 22 professionals working at the Department today, including: 1 Doctor of Education, Professor; 9 Candidates of Sciences, Associate Professors; 1 Candidate of Sciences, Senior Lecturer; 7 Assistants; 4 Laboratory Assistants led by the Head of the computer laboratories.

The current scientific direction of the Department is “Using of modern Information Technologies in education and science”.

Scientific and technological projects developed and implemented by scientists of the Department:

  • “Electronic library of higher education institution integrated into the European educational and scientific library systems” ranks among top five largest libraries in Ukraine and serves more than 400 users from all over the world every day (2007-2008);
  • E-OLYMP “The Internet portal of organizational and methodological support of programming competitions for gifted youth of Ukraine’s educational institution” is constantly used by more than 7000 students and teachers from more than 100 countries (2009-2010);
  • Information system “Magister” for applicants’ pre-registration and documents reception;
  • Educational Portal “ZDU Project” devoted to educational materials and distance learning in all their kinds.

Annually the scientific and methodological base is updated with new training manuals, scientific developments, which reflects the Department members’ professionalism. During the years of the department’s existence, our teachers prepared more than 400 publications, including — 70 training handbooks, including 5 which were approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

Students are involved in research life within the task groups. The current students’ task groups are:

  1. Development of electronic resources and learning tools (Associate Professor T. A. Vakaliuk);
  2. Using of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in high school educational process (Associate Professor S. M. Horobets);
  3. Technologies of electronic educational resources development for support of academic subjects learning (Associate Professor O. Yu. Usata);
  4. Technologies of software development (Associate Professor Ya. B. Sikora);
  5. Using of ICT in educational process of Physics and Mathematics faculty (Associate Professor S. O. Karpliuk).

The Department provides training of Computer Science Bachelors, Specialists and Masters. The graduates meet the increasing needs of Zhytomyr Region in developers and users of modern Information Technologies and computer products. Some Computer Science graduates successfully work in other regions of Ukraine and abroad.

The Department also provides Computer Science and Information Technologies training of all Zhytomyr State University students.

The educational process is based on modern material and technical facilities. In 2003 the Computer centre was run. There are 9 computer classes served by 4 Laboratory Assistants led by the Head of the computer laboratories (Ye. Kuzmenko).

The third round of the All-Ukrainian Competitions in Programming and Information and Communication Technologies for school students is organized by teachers of the Department. The Department members also take part (as jurors) in The Minor Academy of Sciences second round Competitions in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Modeling.

The Department cooperates with the Faculty of Cybernetics of Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University, Institute of Information Technology of National Pedagogical Dragomanov University, Institute of Information Technologies and Learning Tools of National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine, National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”, Zhytomyr State Technological University, Zhytomyr Regional Institute of Postgraduate Pedagogical Education, Ukrainian Physical and Mathematical Lyceum of Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University, “School of the Future” experimental educational complex (Yalta), Zhytomyr local office of The Minor Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Zhytomyr Regional Pedagogical Lyceum of Zhytomyr Regional Council, Zhytomyr Lyceum of Zhytomyr State Technological University, Zhytomyr Mykola Shchors Lyceum № 25, Berdychiv specialized school of I-III levels № 17 with in-depth study of Computer Science.

Department staff is carrying out educational working with students. Teachers meet engagements of academic groups’ mentors, keep in touch with graduates of last years.
