English Language Department

The English Language Department was founded on 16, October, 1949.

The Heads of the department were: V. P. Serdiuk (1949–1953), K. A. Sedlets’kyi (1953–1967), V. I. Fadeiev (1967–1972), I. G. Drahan (1972–1975), Zh. A. Golikova (1975–1980), V. P. Sasina (1980–1982), V. V. Yevchenko (1982–1992), D. I. Kveselevych (1992–1993), A. E. Levyts’kyi (1993–1995), V. V. Yevchenko (1995–2009).

At the present time, the Acting Head of the department is the Candidate of Philological Sciences, Senior Lecturers Zornytska Iryna Valeriivna.

15 teachers are working at the English Language Department including 3 associate professors, candidates of philological sciences; 2 associate professors, candidates of pedagogical sciences; 1 associate professor, candidate of psychological sciences; 1 senior lecturer, candidate of philological sciences; 1 senior lecturer, candidate of pedagogical sciences; 6 lecturers who have already completed postgraduate studies.

The department trains specialists in “Philology. Germanic Languages and Literature (English) including translation”.

The teachers of the department carry out the scientific research on the topic “Research of the English Language Cognitive, Functional, Communicative and Pragmatic Peculiarities: Linguocultural and Comparative Aspects”.

All teachers of the department take an active part in scientific conferences on all levels.

The teachers of the department are members of the International organization TESOL.

The teachers of the department cooperate with leading international higher educational establishments. For instance, associate professor, the candidate of philological sciences Semeniuk I. S. received the award from the Embassy of the United States and took part in the 46th annual TESOL Convention and English Language Expo and obtained the grant to participate the program of the Professional Development for the Practicing ESL/EFL Teachers. Associate professor, the candidate of philological sciences Semeniuk I. S. carried out scientific researchand gave lectures on Cognitive Linguistics in Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University (Turkey). In 2014 the English language Department together with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, Ivan Ohienko Kamianets-Podilskyi National University, the Center of British and American Studies in Ukraine, Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University, International Association TESOL-Ukraine, Taras Shevchenko Chernihiv National Pedagogic University and International Linguistic Center Aceskills (Great Britain) organized the 21st International Student Internet Conference “English in Interdisciplinary context of Life-long Education” and International Round-Table Meeting “Contemporary Problems of Cognitive Studies”.

The cooperation of English Philology and Translation Department, English Language Department and “Alecom” organization resulted in the creation of preparatory program for school leavers who plan to enter the leading Canadian Universities.

In 2012 the local regional branch of “Ukrainian Association of Cognitive Linguistics and Poetics” was created at the English language department. Its aim is to provide scientific research within the fields of cognitive science and adjacent areas to obtain and popularize the results of the studies, both fundamental and applied. The head of the local brunch is associate professor, the candidate of philological sciences Semeniuk I. S.

Associate professors of the department supervise the students’ research work (associate professor, the candidate of philological sciences Kotniuk L. H., associate professor, the candidate of philological sciences Snikhovska I. E., associate professor, the candidate of pedagogical sciences, senior lecturer Hrygorieva T. Yu., the candidate of pedagogical sciences, senior lecturer Maliarchuk O. V., associate professor, the candidate of philological sciences Kryvoruchko T. V., associate professor, the candidate of psychological sciences Diachuk N. V.).

There are scientific societies at the department. Among them are:

  • A scientific society on cognitive linguistics (supervisor: associate professor, the candidate of philological sciences Maliarchuk O. V.);
  • A scientific society on stylistic peculiarities of a literary text (supervisor: senior lecturer, the candidate of philological sciences Zornytska I. V.);
  • A scientific society on theoretical grammar problems (supervisor: associate professor, the candidate of philological sciences Kotniuk L. H.).

The main functions of the department are:

  • organizing the teaching process, selecting the teaching staff;
  • supervising the teaching process;
  • organizing and conducting scientific and methodological seminars;
  • carrying out scientific researches;
  • supervising the students’ scientific work, organizing and holding the students’ scientific conferences;
  • methodological support and supervision of the students’ Bachelors’ and Masters’ research papers;
  • participation of the teaching staff in scientific conferences on all levels;
  • the publishing activity of the department;
  • the constant development of the teaching and scientific level of the teaching staff.

The scientific research laboratory of the English Language Department “Historical and Country Study Principles of Foreign Language Teacher Training”, founded in January 2011, carries out its investigations.

The main aim of the laboratory work is implementing the models of distance and adult education, distance education courses into the teacher training process and designing the guidelines for teachers in the system of lifelong education of Ukraine on the basis of country study education. The achieved results are applied in the scientific and methodological work of the Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University.

The laboratory work emphasizes the following spheres of study:

  • Theory and practice of distance and adult education in the institutions of higher education;
  • Studying the historical background of foreign language teacher training in Ukraine and abroad;
  • Investigation of modern teacher training approaches in teaching foreign languages;
  • Designing the methodological supply of the academic disciplines taught by the English Language Department teachers;
  • Arranging the information about research work of the laboratory, articles, reports and teaching materials on the Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University website.

Apart from that, the laboratory work is based on the cooperation with a number of institutions of higher education of Ukraine, institutes of undergraduate studies, scientific schools and laboratories, organizing conferences and conducting seminars.

The scientific activity of the laboratory contributes to the involvement of talented students into the sphere of science; encourages teachers, postgraduates and students to conduct scientific research in the fields of comparative studies, theory and methodology of lifelong education.

Academic staff
Zornytska Iryna Valeriivna

Scientific degree, position held: head of the department, senior lecturer, candidate of philological scienses.

Information: Iryna Zornytska entered Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University in 2001 and in 2007 graduated and was adjudged worthy of distinction. Obtained the Master’s Degree in Pedagogy and Methodology of Higher Education (English and German Languages and Foreign literature). In 2012 finished postgraduate studies and in 2014 was assigned the PhD (Theory of Literature). The viva took place at Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University (Diploma № 022225), thesis topic is “Literary Paradox Poetics (a case study of drama in the second half of the 20th century)”. Has been working at Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University since 2006 and in 2014 was appointed the head of the English Language Department.

Zornytska I. V. is the scientific supervisor and the lecturer teaching “Translational Analysis and Editing” as well as some practical couses.

Snikhovska Irena Eduardivna

Scientific degree, position held: Candidate of Sciences (Philology), Associate Professor.

Information: In 1994 graduated Zhytomyr State University named after Ivan Franko magna cum laude, specialty “English and German”, with the qualification of a teacher of the English language and literature and German language. After postgraduate studies at the Department of English Philology of Zhytomyr State University named after Ivan Franko in 2005 successfully defended the thesis at the specialized Academic Council of Zaporizhzhya National University (Diploma DK No. 031218). The title of the thesis: “Mechanisms, tools, and techniques of language play in the modern English language”.

Snikhovska I. E. has worked at Zhytomyr State University named after Ivan Franko since 1998. The term of pedagogical employment in higher educational institutions of III-IV accreditation levels — 18 years, including in Zhytomyr State University named after Ivan Franko — 18 years.

In December 2008 was conferred the academic title of Associate Professor of the Department of English Philology and Translation, Certificate 12 ÄÖ 021824. From 2007 to 2009 Snikhovska I. E. held the position of Associate Professor of the Department of English Philology and Translation. Since September 2009 until present holds the position of Associate Professor at the Department of English Language at the Research Institute of Foreign Philology of Zhytomyr State University named after Ivan Franko.

Snikhovska I. E. gives a course of lectures in the Theory of the Modern English language and gives instruction in the Practical Course of English as a Second Foreign Language. She provides methodological support of educational process, supervises students’ term papers, diploma and master theses (eg.: Nikitenko Anna “Values of the American Society in Phraseology”, Ostapenko Inna “Means of Verbalization of the Linguo-cultural Concept “American Dream”, etc.). Snikhovska I. E. supervises the activity of student research in the field of text linguistics and linguoculturology.

Snikhovska I. E. has 35 publications, including 30 articles of the research as well as 5 publications of educational-methodical character.

After defending the thesis Snikhovska I. E. authored in 20 publications, and co-authored in 3 practical manuals.

Kotniuk Liudmyla Hryhorivna

Scientific degree, position held: PhD (Philology), associate professor.

Information: In 1974, Liudmyla Kotniuk entered Kyiv State Teacher Training Institute of Foreign Languages and graduated from it in 1979 getting a diploma with distinction (speciality — “English and German”, qualifications — a secondary school teacher of English and German). In 1985, she successfully completed the post graduation course at the Department of Grammar and History of English in Kyiv State Teacher Training Institute of Foreign Languages. She has been PhD (Philology) since 1986. On 11 April 1986, she defended a dissertation at the specialized scientific council of Kyiv State Teacher Training Institute of Foreign Languages. The number of the diploma is ÔË № 009564. The theme of the candidate’s dissertation is “The expression of quality graduation in the semantic structure of adjectives denoting size”.

On 11 September 1991, Liudmyla Kotniuk was conferred the academic rank of associate professor of the English Language Department, the number of the certificate is ÄÖ № 040671.

In 1979-1980, she worked as a teacher of English in Zhytomyr secondary school #14. She has been working at Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University since 1980, holding a position of associate professor of the English Language Department in Educational-scientific Institute of Foreign Philology of Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University since 1988.

L. H. Kotniuk conducts the lecture course “Linguistic stylistic analysis of fiction”. She supervises writing term and diploma papers (Batyts’ka Alina Andriivna “Features of Stylistic Semasiological Resources in Advertisement Discourse”, Yukhymchuk Anna Mykolaivna “Lexico-grammatical and Pragmatic Features of Titles in English-language Press Discourse” Shymon Myroslava Olexandrivna “Peculiarities of the author’s speech in E. Hemingway’s novel “A Farewell to Arms”, Samoilenko Olexandra Pavlivna “Lexico-grammatical and Stylistic Features of the English Paremiaes”.

A problem group on questions of theoretical grammar works under her guidance.

Kotniuk K. H. has 83 publications, including 69 scientific and 14 educational methodical ones, 11 works being published in professional editions.

Grygorieva Tetiana Yuriivna

Scientific degree, position held: Candidate of pedagogical sciences, Associate Professor.

Information: In 1994 Grygorieva T. entered Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University and graduated from it in 1999 with the qualification of the teacher of the English and German languages and foreign literature, interpreter/translator.

In 2009 Grygorieva T. completed the post-graduate course and in 2010 defended the thesis on the topic “Training teachers of philology to teaching adults in the system of life-long education in Great Britain”.

Since 2001 Grygorieva T. has been working in Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University and since 2014 she has been an Associate Professor at the English language department of the Educational and Research Institute of Foreign Philology.

Grygorieva T. conducts a lecture course “The formation of the interpretation competence of students of philology” and some practical courses. She is a supervisor of students’ research work.

Grygorieva T. has 17 publications: 15 — scientific, 2 — methodological and 10 are published in special editions.

Voinalovych Liudmyla

Scientific degree, position held: Candidate of pedagogical sciences, senior lecturer.

Information: In 1998 entered Ivan Franko Zhytomyr State University and graduated with honours in 2003 in the speciality "Pedagogy and methodology of secondary education. Language and Literature (English, German)"and received qualification of a teacher of English and German languages and literature. In 2005 graduated from the master’s programme at Ivan Franko Zhytomyr State University on a specialty "Pedagogy and methodology of secondary education. Language and Literature (English) “and got a master’s degree in pedagogical education, acquired a profession of a teacher of English language and literature. In 2009 she graduated from the postgraduate course at the Department of Pedagogy of Ivan Franko Zhytomyr State University.

Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences since 2011. She defended the thesis in May 17, 2011 in the Specialized Academic Council D 14.053.01 at Ivan Franko Zhytomyr State University , diploma number DK № 000290. Topic of the thesis: “Teacher’s training for schools of national minorities in Ukraine (20—30’s of the 20th century)”.

Voinalovych L. P. works at Ivan Franko Zhytomyr State University since 2003. From 2014 till now holds the position of a senior lecturer at the English Language Department in Educational and Scientific Institute of Foreign Languages of Ivan Franko Zhytomyr State University.

Voinalovych L. P. has 23 publications, 21 of them are of scientific and 2 of them are of educational and methodical character, including 10 papers published in professional editions.

Dyachuk Nataliya

Scientific degree, position held: a holder of PhD (Psychology), an associate professor.

Information: In 1999 Nataliya Dyachuk entered Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University and graduated from it in 2004 getting a diploma with honour (speciality — “Pedagogy and Methodology of Secondary Education. Language and Literature (English, German)” and received the qualification of the teacher of the English and German languages and foreign literature. In 2005 got a diploma with honour (speciality — “Pedagogy and Methodology of Secondary Education. Language and Literature (English)” and received qualification of the Master of the English languages and foreign literature.

In 2014 defended the thesis on the topic “Psychological Peculiarities of Creative Potential Realization of Future Literary Texts Translators”. A holder of PhD since 2014.

N. Dyachuk has been working at Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University since 2004, holding a position of an associate professor of the English Language Department in Educational-scientific Institute of Foreign Philology of Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University since 2015.

N. Dyachuk conducts the lecture course on Psycholinguistics, Practical English Course and Practical Grammar Course. She supervises writing the diploma paper. A problem group on questions of generative grammar works under her guidance.

N. Dyachuk has 20 publications, 12 works were published in professional editions.

Kryvoruchko Tetyana Vasylivna

Scientific degree, position held: a holder of PhD (Phylology), senior teacher.

Information: In 1998, Tetyana Kryvoruchko entered Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University and graduated from it in 2003 getting a diploma (speciality — “Pedagogy and Methodology of Secondary Education. Language and Literature (English, German)” and received the qualification of the teacher of the English and German languages and foreign literature.

In 2012 completed the post-graduate course and defended the thesis on the topic “Complex Complementation in Early New English: Structural and Functional Approaches”.

She has been working at Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University since 2003, holding a position of senior teacher of the English Language Department in Educational-scientific Institute of Foreign Philology of Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University since 2015.

Kryvoruchko T. conducts Practical English Course and Practical Grammar Course. She supervises writing term and diploma papers. A problem group on questions of the history of English language works under her guidance.

Kryvoruchko T. has 16 publications, 7 works were published in professional editions.

Khoroshun Olga Oleksandrivna

Scientific degree, position held: senior teacher.

Information: In 2001 O. O. Khoroshun entered Vinnytsa Mykhaylo Kotsiubynsky State Pedagogical University and graduated in 2006 with a Specialist’s Degree of “Pedagogy and Methodology of Secondary School. Language and Literature (English and German)” and got the qualification of Teacher of the English and German Languages and Foreign Literature. In 2013 she completed postgraduate school of Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University, English philology and translator’s/interpreter’s department in the speciality 10.0204 — German Languages.

In 2006-2009 she obtained the position of the teacher of the English and German languages at Berdychiv Pedagogical College. Olga Khoroshun has been working in Ivan Franko Zhytomyr State University since 2011 and since 2011 occupies a position of Deputy Director for Teaching Affairs at Educational and Research Institute of Foreign Philology of Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University.

O. O. Khoroshun conducts a lecture course “Intel. Education for Future” and some practical courses.

O. O. Khoroshun has published 13 scientific articles, 6 of which are in special editions in Ukraine and 2 are abroad.

Chumak Liudmyla Mykolayivna

Scientific degree, position held: instructor.

Information: In 1994 graduated from Zhytomyr State Pedagogical Institute named after Ivan Franko, specialty “English and German”, with the qualification of a teacher of the English language and literature and the German language.

Since May 2011 is an applicant of the Department of Translation Theory and Practice of Zaporizhzhya National University. The title of the thesis: “Combined mechanisms of derivational processes in Modern English” (based on the dictionaries of neologisms and periodicals).

Chumak L. M. has worked at Zhytomyr State University named after Ivan Franko since 1994. Since September 2000 up to July 2004 worked as a vice dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Zhytomyr State University named after Ivan Franko. The term of pedagogical employment in higher educational institutions of III-IV accreditation levels — 21 years, including in Zhytomyr State University named after Ivan Franko — 21 years.

Chumak L. M. doesn the research studying the combinatorial analysis of mental-lingual phenomena and processes of nominal units’ formation that represent the reality; gives instruction in the Practical Course of English, Practical English Phonetics and Practical English Grammar; has prepared the examination sets for the fourth- and fifth-year students of Correspondence Department; provides methodological support of educational process, supervises students’ term papers; works as a students’ group adviser.

Chumak L. M. has 31 publications, (26 are scientific articles), including 15 articles of the research as well as 5 publications of educational-methodical character, and 1 part in collective monograph.

Bilyuk Inna Leonidovna

Scientific degree, position held: lecturer.

Information: In 2005 I. L. Bilyuk entered Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University. In 2011 graduated from it with honours, majoring in “Pedagogy and Methodology of Secondary Education. Language and Literature (English)” and got the qualification of Master of Pedagogical Education, Teacher of English and Foreign Literature, Teacher of German Language and Foreign Literature. In 2012 I. L. Bilyuk entered postgraduate school of Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University, English philology and translator’s/interpreter’s department. Thesis for a Candidate Degree in Philology: Speciality 10.02.04: “City Branding in English Communicative Space: Verbal and Visual Components”.

I. L. Bilyuk has been working in Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University since 2010 and currently holds the position of the lecturer of the English Language Department at Educational and Research Institute of Foreign Philology of Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University.

I. L. Bilyuk conducts the following practical courses: “Practical Course of the First Foreign Language”, “Practical Grammar of the First Foreign Language”.

I. L. Bilyuk has 12 publications, 12 scientific, including 6 papers published in professional journals, 1 — in international edition.

Masel Yuliya Sergiivna

Scientific degree, position held: teacher.

Information: In 2005 entered Zhytomyr State University named after Ivan Franko and graduated with honor in 2010 in the specialty “English and German” and the qualification of a teacher of English Language and Literature and German. In 2012 she entered post graduate study at the Zhytomyr State University Department of English Philology and Translation.

Theme of dissertation: “The peculiarities of functioning of substandard units in the journalistic and political discourses”.

June 29, 2016 dissertation got preliminary approval for the degree of candidate of philology on specialty 10.02.04 — Germanic languages.

Since 2010 and now has been working at the Department of English Language Educational and Research Institute of Foreign Philology Zhytomyr State University named after Ivan Franko.

Masel Y. S. conducts practical classes in basic foreign language, practical phonetics and practical grammar.

Levchenko Olga Mukolaiivna

Scientific degree, position held: teacher.

Information: In 1997 entered Zhytomyr State University named after Ivan Franko and graduated with honors in 2002 in the specialization “English and German languages” and received the qualification of teacher of English and German languages and foreign literature. In 2003 finished Master’s Degree Program at Zhytomyr State University named after Ivan Franko. In 2011 entered postgraduate course in specialization 10.01.06 — theory of literature, scientific adviser Doctor of Philology, Professor Chirkov A.

Subject of the research: “Drama: genre-generating processes (based on the US drama of the late 20th — early 21st centuries)”.

Levchenko Olga has been working at Zhytomyr State University named after Ivan Franko since 2002. From 2003 till now she works at the Department of the English Language of Educational and Research Institute of Foreign Philology of Zhytomyr State University named after Ivan Franko.

Levchenko O. M. teaches the following practical courses: “Practical course of the English language”, “Practical Grammar of English” and “Practical phonetics of English”.

Levchenko O. M. has 9 publications, including 4 — scientific publications, 2 — educational and methodical publications, including 2 works published in the professional journals.

Khmara Victiria Volodymyrivna

Scientific degree, position held: teacher.

Information: In 2006 she entered the Zhytomyr State University named after Ivan Franko and graduated with honor in specialization “Pedagogy and methodology of secondary education. Language and Literature (English)” and received the qualification of a teacher of English language and foreign literature. In 2013 she entered postgraduate studies at Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University by speciality 10.02.17 Comparative-historical and Typological Linguistics.

The topic of her candidate Dissertation “Phraseological units with anthropic component in the East-Slavonic and West-Germanic languages: Comparative Aspect”.

Since 2011 till now hold the position of teacher in the department of English Language at the Teaching and Research Institute of Foreign Philology Zhytomyr State University named after Ivan Franko.

Khmara V. V. has 12 publications, including 6 published in professional journals, and 1 article in a foreign journal.
